Tilley Hats Explained: Which Style Is Right for You?

Choosing the right Tilley hat comes down to three things: the brim shape you prefer, how much ventilation you need and whether you want a crisp or worn-in appearance.

Choose the Tilley LTM5 Airflow for warm-weather walking and active use. Pick the T5MO Organic Airflow for breathable comfort with a softer cotton feel. The T3 is the traditional snap-up choice, while the T3 Wanderer gives you the same broad shape with a more relaxed finish. For a simple cotton-duck all-rounder with a slightly neater brim, choose the T5.

What are the main differences between these Tilley hats?

IN SIMPLE TERMS

The T3 and T3 Wanderer have the broadest side brim and distinctive snap-up styling. The T5, LTM5 and T5MO have a slightly narrower medium-brim shape, with the two Airflow models adding mesh around the crown for increased ventilation.

Is the T3 or T5 the better everyday Tilley hat?

The T3 is the better choice when you want the recognisable snap-up Tilley shape and a little more brim coverage at the front and sides. The T5 is better when you prefer a cleaner medium-brim outline.

Both hats use cotton duck and include brass ventilation eyelets. The difference is largely about shape and appearance rather than one being universally better.

On the size 7 3/8 models, the T3's front brim is 1/8 inch wider than the T5's, while its side brim is 1/4 inch wider. The back measurements are the same. It is a small numerical difference, but it gives the T3 a visibly broader profile around the sides of the face.

Which Tilley hat is best for hot weather?

The LTM5 Airflow is our first choice for hot weather, active holidays and longer walks. It is made from Tilley's lightweight Nylamtium nylon and has a 3/4-inch polyester mesh section around the crown. The model is designed for increased comfort during hot days and strenuous activity.

Its nylon construction gives it a more technical look than the cotton-duck styles. That makes it a natural choice for hiking, sightseeing, fishing and other activities where ventilation takes priority over heritage styling.

Lightweight nylon and a ventilated mesh crown make this the practical choice for hotter days.

The T5MO Organic Airflow is the alternative for anyone who wants ventilation but prefers the feel and appearance of cotton. It uses 98% certified organic cotton with 2% spandex and has a 3/4-inch mesh section in the crown. The listed weight is 99 grams, and it has the same published brim dimensions as the LTM5 and T5.

In practical terms, choose the LTM5 when lightweight technical fabric is your priority. Choose the T5MO when you want a softer cotton-rich hat that still has a ventilated crown.

What makes the T3 Wanderer different from the standard T3?

The main difference is the finish.

The standard T3 has the cleaner, more structured appearance associated with a traditional cotton-duck outdoor hat. The T3 Wanderer is pre-washed and uses an enzyme-wash finish to create a softer, faded appearance that looks comfortably worn from the first outing.

The two models share the same listed brim dimensions. Both measure 2 3/4 inches at the front and back and 2 3/8 inches at the sides in size 7 3/8. They also share the characteristic snap-up brim styling.

Choose the standard T3 if you prefer a crisp, traditional finish. Choose the Wanderer if you like country clothing and accessories to feel relaxed from the first wear.

How should a Tilley hat fit?

A Tilley hat should fit slightly loose rather than gripping tightly around your head. Tilley advises that its hats are designed to sit comfortably low, with gravity helping to keep the hat in place.

How to measure your head

  1. Place a soft tape measure or piece of string around the widest part of your head.
  2. Position it approximately 1 to 2 cm above the tops of your ears and brow line.
  3. Record the measurement without pulling the tape too tightly.
  4. Add 2 cm for comfort.
  5. Compare the final measurement with the Tilley sizing chart.

Tilley size guide

Use your final head measurement to find the closest corresponding Tilley hat size.

Size range X-Small Small Medium Large X-Large XX-Large
Tilley size 6 7/8 7 7 1/8 7 1/4 7 3/8 7 1/2 7 5/8 7 3/4 7 7/8 8 8+
Head size 55cm 56cm 57cm 58cm 59cm 60cm 61cm 61.5cm 62.5cm 63.5cm 66.5cm

On a smaller screen, swipe across the table to see every size.

A Tilley should not leave a deep pressure mark or feel as tight as a fitted cap. Because these hats are sold in precise numerical sizes, taking an accurate measurement before ordering is worthwhile.

See Tilley's official fit and sizing guidance before choosing your size.

Are Tilley hats waterproof?

The five hats in this guide are described as repelling rain, but it is more accurate to call them water-repellent than fully waterproof. They are designed to cope with showers and outdoor use, but they should not be treated as a substitute for a waterproof hood during prolonged heavy rain.

Mesh sections also create an important distinction. The LTM5 and T5MO prioritise ventilation, so their crown construction is more open than the eyelet-ventilated T3 and T5 styles.

For changeable British weather, the best option depends on your priorities. Pick a cotton T3 or T5 for traditional styling, or one of the Airflow models when staying cooler is more important.

How do you wash a Tilley hat?

Always check the care label inside your particular hat before washing it.

For washable Tilley hats, the official guidance is to use a delicate machine cycle with warm or cool water, or wash gently by hand with a soap that contains no bleach or whitening agents. The hat should then be reshaped while damp and left to air-dry.

Do not put the hat in a tumble dryer, as this may distort its shape. Tilley also advises against using bleach because it can damage the fabric and void the guarantee.

What does Tilley's Guaranteed for Life cover?

Some Tilley products are Guaranteed for Life against normal wear and tear, poor workmanship or faulty materials. Eligibility is not automatic for every Tilley product, so buyers should check for the designated guarantee badge and the label supplied with the item.

Eligible products must be registered with Tilley within 60 days of purchase. A future claim may require purchase details, photographs and evidence that the product carries the correct Guaranteed for Life label. Qualifying replacements are subject to a handling fee.

The guarantee does not cover every type of damage. Current exclusions include misuse, improper care, staining, fading, shrinking, grommet patina and frayed windcords.

Always read the latest Tilley Guaranteed for Life terms and register an eligible hat promptly after purchase.

Which Tilley hat should you choose?

  • Choose the T3 for the traditional snap-up Tilley appearance and the broadest side brim in this comparison.
  • Choose the T3 Wanderer for the same broad shape with a softer, lived-in finish.
  • Choose the T5 for a classic cotton-duck all-rounder with a neater medium brim.
  • Choose the LTM5 Airflow for hot weather, active walking and technical lightweight comfort.
  • Choose the T5MO Organic Airflow for a breathable hat with a soft, cotton-rich construction.

There is no single best Tilley hat for everyone. The best model is the one that matches your preferred fit, fabric and type of outdoor use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Tilley T3 and T5?

The T3 has a wider front and side brim and can be worn with its sides snapped up. The T5 has a slightly narrower medium brim for a cleaner, more understated profile. Both models use cotton duck with brass eyelets.

Which Tilley hat is coolest in summer?

The LTM5 Airflow is the strongest choice for active summer use because it combines lightweight nylon with a mesh crown section designed for hot days and strenuous activity. The T5MO is a good alternative for buyers who prefer cotton-rich fabric.

Should a Tilley hat fit tightly?

No. Tilley recommends a slightly loose fit, with the hat sitting comfortably low on the head. Measure 1 to 2 cm above the ears and brow line, then add 2 cm for comfort before checking the sizing chart.

Can you wash a Tilley hat in a washing machine?

Many Tilley hats can be machine-washed on a delicate cycle, but you should always check the label first. Use warm or cool water, avoid bleach and reshape the hat before leaving it to air-dry.

Do Tilley hats float?

The T5MO product information states that it floats. Some other Tilley designs also use flotation material, but buyers should check the specification of the exact model rather than assuming every Tilley product floats.

Are all Tilley hats Guaranteed for Life?

No. Only eligible products carrying the designated Guaranteed for Life label are covered. Registration, exclusions and claim terms apply.
