Barbour Sylkoil vs Thornproof: The Ultimate Waxed Cotton Guide

If you’ve been browsing for a classic Barbour waxed jacket, you’ve likely noticed two terms appearing over and over again in the product descriptions: Sylkoil and Thornproof.

At Allweathers, we have been an authorised Barbour stockist for over 40 years. In our time fitting thousands of customers, this is one of the most common questions we get asked.

While both fabrics offer the legendary weather protection Barbour is known for, they look, feel and age quite differently. Let’s break down the technical and aesthetic differences so you can choose the right wax finish for your style.

In Simple Terms

Thornproof is smoother, shinier and more traditional; Sylkoil is softer, matte and more relaxed. Both are waxed cotton, both need the same care, and both can last for years when re-waxed properly.

At a Glance: The Main Differences

Feature Barbour Thornproof Barbour Sylkoil
Finish Smooth, glossy and slightly shiny Matte, rugged and textured
Cotton Base Calendered / pressed smooth before waxing Uncalendered / keeps the natural cotton texture
Feel Slightly waxier to the touch Drier, softer and more fabric-like
How it Ages Develops sharper, brighter crease lines Develops a softer, vintage-style patina
Commonly Found On Beaufort, Bedale, Border, Beadnell Classic Beaufort, Classic Bedale, Classic Beadnell, Classic Northumbria, Ashby, Corbridge, Sapper, Beacon Sports Wax

This is not a complete list, as Barbour finishes can vary by style and season, but these are some of the best-known examples.

What is Barbour Thornproof Wax?

Thornproof is Barbour’s classic smooth wax finish. It is a lustrous, deep-shine wax that gives off that quintessential heritage look.

The secret to Thornproof is how the cotton is treated before the wax is applied. The raw cotton fabric is run through heavy, heated rollers in a process called calendering. This flattens the cotton fibres, making the fabric incredibly smooth and uniform.

Once Barbour’s heavy archive wax formula is applied to this smooth base, it results in a jacket that is highly resistant to snags, briars and thorns, hence the name.

What it’s Like to Wear

When brand new, a Thornproof jacket can feel a little stiff and look quite shiny. It has a slightly oilier feel to the touch. However, as you wear it, the wax migrates at the flex points, creating bright crease lines that gradually map to your body.

What is Barbour Sylkoil Wax?

Sylkoil is one of Barbour’s oldest heritage finishes, but it was reintroduced to give jackets a more rugged, casual look from day one.

Unlike Thornproof, Sylkoil cotton is not calendered before waxing. It bypasses the heavy smoothing rollers, leaving the natural imperfections and fuzzy texture of the cotton yarn intact. The wax is then dyed and applied directly to this raw weave.

Because the wax sinks deep into the natural, unpressed cotton fibres, the finish is much more matte and low-profile.

What it’s Like to Wear

Sylkoil jackets feel noticeably softer, more flexible and “drier” straight off the peg compared with Thornproof. They skip the initial shiny phase, giving you a rich, vintage, lived-in patina immediately.

The Big Question: Which One Lasts Longer?

We often hear customers assume Thornproof must be tougher than Sylkoil because of the name. In everyday wear, the difference is not usually that simple.

Both finishes offer excellent weather resistance when properly maintained, and for most customers the difference is more about look and feel than performance. Longevity does not depend on which finish you buy; it depends on how well you maintain it.

How to Care for Both Finishes

No matter which finish you choose, both require the same care to stay weather-resistant for years.

  • Never put either jacket in a washing machine or take it to a dry cleaner. This can permanently strip the wax and ruin the jacket.
  • Clean off mud and grit using a sponge and cold water only.
  • Re-wax your jacket every 12 to 18 months depending on use.

The Rewaxing Secret

When your jacket starts showing dry patches, you will use the exact same tin of Barbour Thornproof Dressing to rewax it, regardless of whether it is a Sylkoil or Thornproof jacket.

When you apply the hot dressing to a Sylkoil jacket, it may look shinier for a few weeks. As the wax settles back into the uncalendered cotton fibres, it will gradually return to its signature matte look.

Final Verdict: Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose Barbour Thornproof if: You love the classic, smart, slightly glossy British heritage look. You want a jacket that starts crisp and ages with sharper character lines over the years.
  • Choose Barbour Sylkoil if: You prefer a matte finish, a softer feel straight out of the box, and a relaxed, rugged aesthetic that looks like an old favourite from day one.
